Reciprocating and Rotary Screw Air Compressors

Reciprocating air compressors are the most popular model sold. This piston pump style can be powered by an electric motor or a gasoline engine. The reciprocating model is quieter when compared to the noise level of its Direct Drive counter part. Most automotive shops, car dealers and home shops have reciprocating air compressors, while manufacturing facilities favor the use of a Rotary Screw Design. Atlas® offers many styles of reciprocating and rotary screw air compressors.

Single Stage and Two Stage Air Compressors

Single stage air compressors offer quick recovery time but are only able to produce 150 lbs. PSI. Two stage air compressors are able to compress the air “two times” and can produce air pressure in excess of 175 PSI. The 2 stage model is the more popular of the two and is found in larger service shops where large air volume and increased air pressure is needed. The single stage design is more commonly found in the smaller automotive shops and Mr. Homeowner garages. Atlas® manufactures both types of air compressors and many models are available for sale at Greg Smith Equipment Sales.

Electric Motor Air Compressors

Air compressors are powered by either an electric motor or a gas engine. Electric motors are normally 110 Volt or 220 Volt. Low horsepower motors used on smaller air compressor are usually powered by 110 volt electricity. Larger commercial air compressors have electric motors that normally use 220 Volt. 220 Volt (208V-230V) can be either single phase or three phase. Most buildings have single phase electricity; BUT NOT three phase electricity. Please check with your electrician to determine what type of electricity you have in your building before you order your air compressor from Greg Smith Equipment Sales. The rule of thumb is that electric motors over 10 HP are USUALLY three phase. Atlas® manufactures electric air compressors up to and including 10 HP. air compressors that operate efficiently on 220 V single phase power.

Gasoline Engine Air Compressors

Most gas driven compressors are found on the back of service trucks that perform road service for cars and semi trucks. These gas driven air compressors are used to provide air pressure for impact wrenches, air jacks, and to inflate car and truck tires. Gas engine air compressors allow the air compressor to operate in areas where there is no electricity.

Portable Air Compressors

Atlas® Auto Equipment offers several models of portable air compressors that can be purchased from Greg Smith Equipment Sales. Portable air compressors allow the small shop owner to move the single stage air compressor around inside the shop area. Contractors can use portable air compressors at the job site to deliver a dependable pressurized air supply.
